Imvimbi Traditional Dance Group diversifies

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

Renowned local dance group, Imvimbi has taken the stage by storm with a new and electrifying performance, the Umnzanzi traditional dance which is popular in South Africa.

“It’s a Zulu type of a dance which was performed before a war to motivate the warriors or after a war to celebrate victory. Currently, we are still fine tuning our performance and our target is to introduce it next year during Chibuku NeShamwari competitions. We started rehearsals early this year and we are still perfecting our act,” said Imvimbi Traditional Dance Group Director, Blessed Chakomoka.

Founded in 2001 in Bulawayo, Imvimbi has always been at the forefront of preserving and promoting Zimbabwean culture through dance.

However this time around, the group is pushing boundaries by showcasing a dance form from South Africa, as it celebrates the rich tapestry of African culture.

He added, “In Africa, we are one, we can perform any dance from anywhere. We can perform a dance from Mozambique, South Africa and likewise, those outside Zimbabwe can do the same.”

The Umnzanzi dance is characterised by its trademark, such as rhythmic movements and colourful attire.

“My role is to dance, do some chants and other theatrics related with the dance. This dance is performed in Zulu traditional costumes with bids and related head gear. I like the dance, I feel that I’m doing something I’m supposed to be doing,” said one of the dancers, Sithandekile Ncube.

“All the songs are traditional depicting victory or motivation. Anyone can join the warriors in dance to welcome them or send them off. In this group I am a dancer, percussionist and choreographer,” said a group member, Nkosinathi Banda.

As the Imvimbi Traditional Dance Group continues to push the boundaries of traditional dance, more innovations and inspiring performances from local groups are expected.
