WITH just a week remaining before the FIFA World Cup gets underway across Mexico, Canada and the United States, Ghana’s Black Stars are putting the finishing touches to their preparations after naming a 28-member squad for the tournament.
The West Africans return to football’s biggest stage for a fifth World Cup appearance, determined to make a strong impression under experienced coach Carlos Queiroz.
Ghana remains one of Africa’s most recognised World Cup performers, having come within touching distance of a historic semi-final berth in 2010 before suffering a heartbreaking quarter-final exit to Uruguay.
As the countdown to the tournament continues, much of the responsibility will rest on captain Jordan Ayew, who has become one of the most experienced players in Ghanaian football history. With 119 international appearances, he is now the country’s second most-capped player, one behind his brother, Andre Ayew.
Ayew is expected to provide leadership and experience for a side blending established internationals with emerging talent.
In midfield, Villarreal star Thomas Partey is set to play a pivotal role, bringing composure, leadership and top-level experience, while highly rated FC Nordsjaelland youngster Caleb Yirenkyi is expected to add creativity and energy.
Ghana’s attacking hopes will be led by Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo as the Black Stars seek to progress beyond the group stage and challenge the tournament’s leading nations.
Drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, Ghana face a demanding route to the knockout stages.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England in a highly anticipated encounter on June 23. Their group-stage programme concludes against Croatia on June 27.
With preparations entering their final phase, Ghana will be hoping experience, talent and a renewed sense of ambition can propel them towards another memorable World Cup campaign.
