HARARE residents have called on the local authority to follow up on the installation of traffic and street lights with an upgrade of shades at ranks and public toilets in the central business district.
While the government is burning the midnight oil rehabilitating roads in the capital city, the council has been called upon to also play its part by bringing sanity at various ranks in the CBD.
“There is a lot which needs to be done. The city council should complement by establishing better public toilets as well as clean water,” said one of the residents.
Another added, “ Now that schools will open soon, you will soon realise that school children will be taking drugs in there. Another challenge is that of mahwindi. They don’t respect people especially the elderly and they are the most people causing havoc there.”
After the installation of street lights and replacement of non-working traffic lights, environment monitors expect council to also control littering and ensure orderliness in town.
“Now that most areas have been attended to by the government, I think it’s high time that the city council should complement by bringing sanity onto commuting waiting places. We have realised that most parts of these places do not have garbage bins and are overcrowded by vendors and pool tables and has become difficult to clean,” said an Environment monitor, Ms Tariro Dube.
Environment Champions public relations manager, Mr Fransica Mashonganyika said, “There is a need for the city council to come on board in bringing sanity to these places. There is also need to decongest these places and make sure there is sanity.”
Government has since launched Operation Chenesa Harare while implementing the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme that has seen many roads being rehabilitated.
