HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has destroyed over 500 kilogrammes and 14 000 litres of various confiscated drugs, in what it described as a milestone in the on-going crackdown on drug trafficking.

The destruction was done in a controlled environment, in compliance with health and safety regulations.

ZRP National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi highlighted the magnitude of their operations against drug syndicates.

“The operation against drugs has intensified as more arrests are being effected with confiscation of the illicit drugs being prioritised. Destroying the drugs is at law because we want to avoid the risk of having the same drugs back on the streets. This is a huge milestone for us as the police and it was only made possible by the assistance we got from citizens,” he said.

ZRP’s efforts form part of the national operation which focuses on combating violent crimes and drug smuggling, with the initiative having led to the arrests of over 10 000 drug-related suspects in recent months.

“Since January over 10 000 suspects have been arrested with some having been convicted and already serving various terms. We remain committed to removing illegal drugs from our communities. The destruction of these substances is a crucial step in preventing them from ever reaching the streets,” he added.

The crackdown by the ZRP continues, with the police pledging to intensify intelligence-driven operations and international cooperation to curb drug trafficking in Zimbabwe.

Government set up an inter-ministerial task force to deal with the scourge of drugs which is threatening to destroy generations.
