Youth empowerment and job creation took centre stage in Gweru as graduates from the Gweru Urban Vocational Training Centre pledged to establish businesses after completing training under the Community Skills Outreach Programme (CSOP), in line with the Heritage-Based Education 5.0 Model.
The programme, which focuses on innovation, industrialisation and community development, saw graduates equipped with practical skills aimed at addressing societal needs through entrepreneurship.
One of the graduates said the training had prepared them to venture into business.
“I am happy with the level of education I have acquired. I am ready to open my own saloon as we were also equipped with business skills,” the graduate said.
“I must say the training I received was quite wholesome. It is refreshing that we managed to get training in the hotel and tourism sector. I am now geared to open my own restaurant and make a difference in life,” another added.
A third graduate, who specialised in agriculture, said the training had positioned them to contribute towards national food security.
The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Honourable Tino Machakaire, who was represented by the Chief Director in the Ministry, Mr Elias Murinda, indicated that government would continue to create opportunities for young people.
“Through vocational training and skills empowerment, we are providing young people with productive pathways that reduce idleness and create opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. I therefore urge our youths to reject drug and substance abuse and embrace skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship.”
The graduates were presented with starter packs to help them set up their businesses.
