PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has reassured the nation that no one will die of hunger as government has put in place measures to cushion Zimbabweans from ensure food security despite the looming drought.

Addressing thousands of people who gathered at Kushanduka Farm in Masvingo this Saturday for the memorial service and tombstone unveiling of his grandson Yasha Mafidi Mnangagwa, the President said they have put in place measures to cushion communities from the effects of drought.

“Let me take this opportunity to assure you that no one will die of hunger. We have put in place measures through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development to ensure that our communities our food secure.

“These include solar powered community gardens and the winter wheat programme. Again, through the Ministry of Finance, resources will be channelled towards food security,” he said.

President Mnangagwa also spoke about the importance of preserving national values, paying tribute to the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa for her various empowerment programmes including introducing the national dress.

“As Zimbabweans we must not forget our roots and culture. We thank the First Lady for her various programmes centred on cultural preservation. She again came up with a National Dress, a concept we accepted as government as it identifies us as Zimbabweans.”

President Mnangagwa last month declared the current drought a state of disaster following an EL-Nino phenomenon that characterised the 2023-24 summer cropping season.
