THE Confederation of African Football is set to introduce an African Nations League in 2029, a move that will also see the Africa Cup of Nations switch to a four-year cycle after the 2027 Pamoja edition.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe says the new competition is designed to boost both the commercial and competitive value of African football.
The Nations League will be played annually and integrated into FIFA international windows, allowing Europe-based players to represent their countries without clashes with club commitments.
Unlike AFCON, the tournament will be regionally based.
Africa’s 54 nations will be divided into four zones, with each region producing a champion.
Those four champions will then contest a Final Four tournament at a venue selected by CAF, creating a continental showpiece every year.
Matches are expected to be played between September and November, fitting neatly into the global football calendar.
