ZIMBABWE’S AFCON preparations have been dealt a heavy blow after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and world football governing body, FIFA, adjusted the player release deadline to December 15, a week later than initially planned.
The development dents the Warriors’ preparations as the team had planned a high-level pre-tournament camp ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations set for Morocco.
The delayed release of foreign-based players means the technical team should recalibrate their strategy, training camp and travel arrangements.
The Warriors training camp started on Sunday with coach Marian Marinica initially announcing a preliminary 51-member squad that will be trimmed before departure for Morocco.
Despite the setback, the team is slowly taking shape, with experienced players such as Fint Town United defender Alec Mudimu, who has been recalled from international retirement, Manica Diamonds goalkeeper Tedious Baye and AC Marinhense rising star Colbert Chimedza joining the camp.
The Warriors, who are making their sixth appearance at AFCON, kick off their campaign with a date against the Pharaohs of Egypt on 22 December.
