FOOTBALL fans are bracing for a fierce revival of Zimbabwe’s biggest club rivalry as Highlanders F.C. and Dynamos F.C. lock horns in Sunday’s Jairos Jiri Charity Cup clash at Barbourfields Stadium.
The two traditional foes renew hostilities in what promises to be a high-stakes encounter, despite the match being staged in support of charity. Supporters from both camps view the fixture as more than just a pre-season friendly, but rather a litmus test for the new campaign.
Highlanders fans, eager for silverware after a lengthy drought, say they are hopeful the new technical set-up will restore the club’s glory days.
“It has been a long time since we last tasted success in a cup. We hope the new technical team will give us something to smile about,” said one Bosso supporter.
“We are thirsty for success. This match will help us see if we can match other well-resourced teams. We have not heard much about the new players apart from those who left the club. This game allows us to know our players for the season.”
Across the divide, Dynamos supporters are equally optimistic, backing their new leadership to steady the ship and revive the club’s dominance.
“Our new executive is working around the clock to bring back the glory days. Winning on Sunday will boost the team’s confidence,” said a DeMbare fan.
“Barbourfields remains our home, so we have nothing to fear playing Highlanders here. It is good that the organisers are using the trophy to support and remember the underprivileged in society.”
The spotlight will also fall on the men in charge, with Benjani Mwaruwari leading Highlanders and Genesis Mangombe at the helm for Dynamos. The clash presents an early opportunity for both coaches to demonstrate their credentials and parade their new signings before a demanding fan base.
With pride, bragging rights and momentum at stake, Sunday’s Jairos Jiri Charity Cup encounter is set to deliver the intensity and drama synonymous with Zimbabwe’s most celebrated football rivalry.
