Story by Jonathan Marerwa in Beijing
The Chinese government says Africa must be included in the global green transition process to effectively address pressing environmental and climate challenges.
The Director General of the Department of the Regional Opening up of the National Development and Reform Commission, Mr Xu Jianping, made the call while speaking at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) press centre in Beijing this Monday.
He said more partners are welcome to work with the China-Africa Centre and the Green Alliance to uphold the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits.
Mr Xu added that the partners will deepen and enrich the China-Africa Environmental Cooperation, firmly promote high-quality development under the Belt and Road Initiative and also make greater contributions to accelerating the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and realising common development between China and Africa.
He noted that climate change is a common challenge facing mankind and therefore requires joint efforts of all countries in the world.
Mr Xu revealed that the Declaration on China-Africa Co-operation on Climate Change defines the establishment of strategic synergies between China and Africa on climate change in the new era and launches the special action plan on the scourge.
China has so far signed 19 memoranda of understanding on South-South Co-operation on Climate Change with 17 African countries.
