OUTGOING Malawian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency General (Retired) Peter Namathanga, has hailed the strong bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Malawi as he bade farewell to President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House in Harare on Wednesday.
Ambassador Namathanga has served in Zimbabwe since June 2025 and reflected on the major achievements of his diplomatic mission.
“The key highlights during the tenure of my office have been the mid-term review of our Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation. We had this recent meeting about a month ago here in Harare. That was the key point of my tenure in office in Harare.”
He said Zimbabwe and Malawi will continue strengthening cooperation in agriculture, tourism and mining.
“We are focusing on areas of agriculture, tourism and mining. These are the areas that we have been focusing on and where I want to build on the foundations that we have laid.”
The ambassador also commended Zimbabwe for facilitating the safe transit of Malawian nationals returning home from South Africa through Zimbabwean border posts.
“This has been very outstanding. I personally have been at the Beitbridge Border Post to see how the passage is happening. I was impressed by the performance of the immigration officers of Zimbabwe and how they are assisting our Malawians to pass through safely. I also visited the Nyamapanda Border. It was the same thing, excellent performance by the immigration officers.”
Ambassador Namathanga also called for greater collaboration among African countries to address the growing impact of climate change on agriculture, saying the continent must prioritise climate-proofing its agricultural sector to safeguard food security.
