THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has stepped up its crime-fighting capabilities by introducing body cameras, drone technology and online case reporting as part of a broader drive to modernise policing and improve public service delivery.
The technology is designed to make policing smarter, faster and more transparent by enhancing accountability, strengthening crime prevention and improving access to police services.
The force has rolled out body cameras to record police interactions, drones for crowd monitoring and search operations, and digital platforms that enable members of the public to report crimes and provide information more efficiently.
Speaking during the launch of the Chiredzi District Client Service Charter on Wednesday, Officer Commanding Crime and Operations Superintendent Tinei Kabvundu said technology is transforming police operations.
“Technology helps us to be accountable and efficient. We are leaving no chance for corruption, and we are increasing access to the police for the public in terms of reporting crimes and giving tips to the police. Response should be immediate as we work together to create crime-free communities.”
Traditional leaders welcomed the adoption of modern policing tools, saying they would strengthen relations between communities and the police.
“When people are at home, they are mostly afraid of the police, but such engagements will make them realise that the police are friends and there to assist,” said Chief Tshovani.
Chief Chilonga said the use of drones would strengthen community safety.
“We are quite excited with the use of technology; having drones to monitor our communities will deter criminals.”
Chiredzi District Development Coordinator Mr Lovemore Chisema said the technological upgrades come at a critical time.
“It is a new and exciting era because they have embraced technology at a critical time. Crime rates are going up because of an influx of people, but with such measures in place, situations can be controlled.”
Residents also welcomed the introduction of 24-hour WhatsApp tip lines, saying they would make it easier to report crime and seek assistance.
“We were given numbers to use which will be open 24 hours and it is a good thing to know that the police are just a text away,” said one resident.
Another added: “There is no need for us to now go to the police station physically, as we can always call to notify them of a crime or even when I am in danger. It shows that we are moving with the times.”
A third resident said: “The use of body cams will reduce corruption, and the use of drones will make us feel safe knowing activities are being recorded.”
The technology-driven initiatives mark a shift towards proactive policing, enabling faster response times, greater transparency, stronger accountability and closer collaboration between the police and the communities they serve.
