Bulawayo Chiefs bank on home form in relegation battle

BULAWAYO Chiefs are targeting a strong finish to the second half of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season as they bid to preserve their top-flight status following promotion this year.

The Bulawayo side returned to the Premier Soccer League after several seasons in Division One and is determined to cement its place among the country’s elite clubs.

With the second half of the campaign underway, Amakhosi Amahle are focused on improving consistency and collecting the points needed to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Chiefs currently sit five points above the drop zone but have struggled for consistency, managing just one win in their last five league matches. A difficult run towards the end of the first half of the season also saw the team endure a month without scoring, while defensive lapses proved costly.

Coach John Nyikadzino acknowledged the challenges of adapting to life in the top flight but believes the team has made progress.

“First of all, I would want to appreciate that the first round was not easy. Like a newly promoted side, it was a matter of adjusting to the Premier League level. There are no pushovers in this league. Every team is competitive. It is a tough league. In the first half, we had a challenge of conceding a lot of goals. We have since rectified that, and we hope to collect more points to be safe from relegation,” he said.

Chiefs will look to strengthen their survival bid when they host MWOS at Luveve Stadium on Saturday, where they remain unbeaten this season.
