HIGH-INTENSITY competition lit up the ongoing Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports (ZITS) Games in Harare this Friday, with universities asserting dominance in volleyball to book places in the finals.
Institutions affiliated to the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA), including the University of Zimbabwe, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), powered through the group stages and semi-finals to secure spots in Saturday’s title deciders.
The universities overcame spirited resistance from polytechnics and teachers’ colleges in a day marked by fierce rallies, tactical battles and packed courts.
While ZUSA institutions stamped their authority in volleyball, teams from other associations kept the competition alive with determined performances across several sporting disciplines.
Harare Polytechnic, Bulawayo Polytechnic, Mutare Polytechnic and Hillside Teachers College impressed with displays of grit and skill as athletes battled for national honours.
“The competition has been tough but exciting; we look forward to seeing among the qualifiers who wins,” a participant said.
Another student attributed the strong performances to preparation and teamwork.
“Preparations and teamwork have played a key role in the team’s performance so far. We are confident in our ability to compete at the highest level of the tournament,” the student said.
The multi-sport tournament, hosted in Harare, has brought together athletes from universities, polytechnics and teachers’ colleges from across Zimbabwe.
As the games enter their final day this Saturday, anticipation is building for what organisers expect to be a thrilling conclusion, with large crowds expected to witness the battle for supremacy among the country’s tertiary institutions.
