Mangombe, Chiragwi lock horns in PSL encounter

TWO coaches with Brazilian-inspired nicknames lock horns at Rufaro Stadium as Harare giants Dynamos and log leaders CAPS United renew their fierce rivalry this Sunday in a Harare Derby that carries more than just three points.

Zimbabwe has not hosted Brazil in over two decades, but echoes of the South American flair will take centre stage at Rufaro as Genesis ‘Kaka’ Mangombe and Takesure ‘Deco’ Chiragwi marshal their sides into one of the country’s biggest football spectacles.

Former Real Madrid and AC Milan attacking midfielder Kaká is a Brazilian legend, while former Barcelona midfielder Deco, who played for Portugal, was raised in Brazil.

Their names will echo as two young Zimbabwean tacticians, breathing new life into fallen giants, now collide with momentum and pride at stake.

Mangombe has steadied the Dynamos ship after last season’s flirtation with relegation, while Chiragwi has engineered a resurgence at Makepekepe, lifting them to the summit of the standings.

CAPS United sit top of the log, with Dynamos lurking five points behind, setting the stage for a high-stakes encounter.

The two Harare giants, however, turn up for the encounter wounded, with Dynamos winless in four outings and CAPS United smarting from a weekend defeat, but history has shown the derby cares little about form and everything for nerve.

Mangombe remains defiant, framing the contest as one that will be won in the mind before the pitch.

“We know where we are coming from, but we will be ready for the match. This is a psychological battle. We prepared the team accordingly, and we should be able to come out with a positive result. They are also coming from a loss, so we can take advantage of that and try to prey on their low confidence after a good run,” he said.

The fixture promises intensity and intrigue, with both sides rediscovering identity after last season’s struggles.

Last term, the rivals shared the spoils in a one-all draw before Dynamos won the reverse fixture by a solitary goal, adding another chapter to a long-standing rivalry.

PSL action, however, begins on Saturday with Simba Bhora hosting ZPC Kariba at Wadzanayi.

FC Platinum welcome defending champions Scotland at Mandava, while in-form Ngezi Platinum Stars travel to Harare for a date against FC Hunters at Rufaro Stadium.

MWOS take on Chicken Inn at Ngoni in what could be a lively contest, Bulawayo Chiefs clash with Herentals at Barbourfields, while winless Manica Diamonds and AGAMA round off the day’s programme at Sakubva Stadium.

On Sunday, Highlanders will be aiming to return to winning ways when they face Triangle at Barbourfields. And when the dust settles on the weekend’s action, all eyes will remain fixed on Rufaro.
