Legends Night revives Zim’s musical classics at HICC

Story by John Nhandara

THE Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) was the place to be for old school music lovers who had a feel of local classics courtesy of various performances at the Legends Night.

Curated by the InTotal Band, the show has built its identity around reviving songs that define earlier generations, reconnecting audiences with musical moments many thought were lost.

It has also drawn a cross generational audience from young listeners discovering classics, to older listeners reliving their youth.

The show attracted music fans from Harare and beyond, living up to its billing as the Intotal Band thrilled the audience with a well-coordinated and rich discography from both living and late Zimbabwean musicians.

Fans were taken down memory lane as they danced to classics from the likes of the late Dr Oliver Mtukudzi, Leornard Zhakata, System Tazvida, Simon Chimbetu, Andy Brown, Zig-zag Band, Mai Patai, Alick Macheso, Nicholas Zakaria, Mbuya Maduve and Leornard Dembo, and Fungisai Zvakavapano Mashavave, among others.

The voice imitations sounded real so much that one would have been mistaken to think that some of the musical legends were the ones performing.

The vintage and classic dressing of flared high waist trousers, shiny outfits and afro hair styles, were the  icing on the cake.

The show also included a saxophone ensemble rendition of “Ndire Ndire” which captivated the entire auditorium.

In a surprise act, the legendary all men band, the Cool Crooners, serenaded the crowd with their hit “Bhulugwa Lami”.
