BINDURA – TWO promising young athletes from Masembura village in Bindura, Nigel Banda and Charles Chiredzi, are preparing to fly the national flag high as they travel to Maputo, Mozambique, to represent Zimbabwe in the upcoming 2025 Confederation of Southern Africa Beach Volleyball Series, scheduled to take place from May 23 to May 25.
The 19-year-old duo, who honed their skills on a makeshift sand court in rural Hwaerera village, have defied the odds to earn a spot on the national team.
“Volleyball has taught me a lot, including six-a-side techniques. In Maputo, we are going to fight. We hope to win and gain experience that could help us qualify for the Olympics,” Nigel Banda said.
“We expect stiff competition, but we are going to give it our all and aim for gold. If we can win the entire series, we may secure a place at the Olympics and get a chance to play against top teams like Sweden and Italy,” Charles Chiredzi said.
Their coach, Aaron Mutede, Director of the A.M Beach Volleyball Academy, commended the boys’ dedication and highlighted the sport’s potential to grow in rural communities due to its low resource requirements.
“Beach volleyball is ideal for our African context. It is accessible and requires minimal equipment just a net and sand. With proper support, it can be our ticket to the Olympics,” he said.
In a heartfelt send-off, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo, praised the pair for their determination and for representing rural communities on an international stage.
“What makes your story exceptional is your humble background. You are not only athletes but also ambassadors of Hwaerera village and all rural children with big dreams. The nation stands behind you, and we await your return with pride and victory,” he said.
The regional tournament will feature elite youth and senior beach volleyball teams from across Southern Africa, making it a key event in the Olympic qualification pathway.
