THE Pan-African Parliament (PAP) has taken up the task of promoting the use of indigenous languages for official communication as part of efforts to preserve African culture and identity.

The African Union (AU) recognises the importance of promoting and protecting African identity, languages, culture and values.

As one of the key AU Organs, the Pan-Pan-African Parliament (PAP) is cognisant of the importance of the issue in protecting African heritage in line with the objectives of Agenda 2063.

The issue was topical during the 4th Ordinary Session of the 6th Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa this Thursday.

Beyond the debate in the Chamber, other legislators are equally determined to push the agenda in their respective countries.

Efforts to promote the use of African languages such as Swahili and Arabic, come in the wake of calls to ensure inclusive and sustainable development on the continent, through homegrown solutions and indigenous knowledge systems.
