LOWER division clubs are just one win away from securing dream ties against Premier Soccer League (PSL) sides after the preliminary round draw for the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup was conducted in Harare on Monday.
Twenty-eight lower division teams have been paired in 14 preliminary-round fixtures scheduled for July 10 and 11, with the winners progressing to the Round of 32.
The victorious teams will then be drawn against PSL clubs in a second draw later in July, giving community-based sides the opportunity to compete against the country’s top-flight teams in Zimbabwe’s premier knockout competition.
The tournament is also advancing its objective of promoting grassroots football by providing emerging clubs with a national platform to showcase talent.
ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi applauded football stakeholders for supporting the competition, saying it continues to gather momentum while uncovering talent from across the country. He also acknowledged President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa for backing the tournament, which he described as the President’s brainchild.
“I want to express my gratitude to all the football stakeholders for the support they have been giving the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup. The momentum is exciting and we have seen amazing talent from different parts of the country being uncovered,” said Magwizi.
“I also want to express my gratitude to His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe, who has been very supportive of this Challenge Cup, which is his brainchild. I’m sure the finale is going to be a lot more exciting.”
The preliminary fixtures see Cheetahs take on Chatidhege, Chapungu face MWOS Under-19, Nottingham Estates meet Norton Big Boys, and Masvingo Winners play Black Rock.
Kwekwe United will battle Deportivo La Murambinda, Rusape Pirates face Odenzi Stars, Jordan take on Destiny Stars, Bluestones meet Chilli, Scotland Juniors play Rosa Pirates, while Buffaloes host Blanket Mine.
Elsewhere, Mawabeni face Aqua Stars, Gwanda Pirates take on Harare City, Gwai Valley Cranes meet Marrere FC, and former PSL side Hwange complete the preliminary fixtures against Green Fuel.
A second draw later this month will pair the 14 preliminary-round winners with PSL clubs, setting up potential David-versus-Goliath contests in the Round of 32.
