The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Midlands Officer Commanding sports tourism event lived up to its billing at the weekend, with issues of drug and substance abuse taking centre stage.
It was a fun-filled weekend as ZPCS officers from across the Midlands province were joined by their counterparts from Mashonaland Central to compete in various sporting disciplines.
The event, which also sought to boost domestic tourism, gave ZPCS officers a memorable time as they exchanged ideas while enhancing their sporting skills.
An officer told the ZBC News, “This year’s edition was quite fun to say the least. We managed to network with our counterparts which enriched our understanding of the service, while giving each other ideas on the need to prepare our exit plans when we retire.”
Another said, “The participation in the sport helped me sharpen my skills as I would want to participate at the international level one of these days representing my country. The winning in the tournament was indeed a bonus.”
The ZPCS leadership reminded officers on the tough stance it has adopted in fighting drug and substance abuse within the organisation.
Midlands Province Officer Commanding, Commissioner Somemore Gate said, “We stand united with His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa in this crucial battle, aiming to protect future generations from the scourge of substance abuse. ZPCS Commissioner General has signalled a renewed focus on maintaining the integrity our ranks through the reintroduction of drug testing.
“This step is a deliberate and necessary action to reinforce our stance against substance abuse and uphold the values of discipline and responsibility critical in the execution of our mandate as an organisation. We also recognise the vital role of domestic tourism, as championed by Her Excellency, Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa. Her advocacy for locals to explore and appreciate our own beautiful destinations aligns perfectly with our goals.”
Government is equally excited by the initiative which complements its efforts to ensure a healthy nation.
The Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Honourable Sleiman Kwidini said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are all too aware of the challenges that drugs and substance abuse poses to our nation. Sports play a crucial role in combating this menace. They serve not only as a vital instrument of social control, but also offer pathways to professional careers that can sustain livelihoods and contribute significantly to our nation’s Gross Domestic Product. Beyond this, sports promote good health and overall wellness.”
The event witnessed several teams and individuals walking away as winners for their outstanding performances.
