Truck driver gets 4 years for crash that killed 9

A truck driver who was convicted for causing an accident which claimed nine lives in Ruwa in May this year has been handed a four-year jail term.

Derrick John Chitope was arraigned before Epworth magistrate Tafadzwa Miti.

He will, however, serve an effective two-year jail term.

Chitope was also prohibited from driving heavy vehicles for life.

In another matter, Terrence Mavheneke, a commuter omnibus conductor who stole a phone at the tragic Seke Road accident that occurred last week, was given a one-year imprisonment term for theft.

Mavheneke, who offered help to injured people at the accident scene, stole a mobile phone from one of the deceased.

Mavheneke appeared before Epworth magistrate Esther Mutezo, who sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment.

Five months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence, with seven months being effective.

In Mutare, a man from Odzi was slapped with a nine year jail term for attempted murder.

Emmanuel Murimba who heavily assaulted the complainant whom he accused of leaving his cattle to graze in his field will, however, serve an effective eight-year jail term after a year of his initial sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour.
