Artists unite against climate change

Story by Grace Sibanda

ELEVEN artists from around Zimbabwe have come together to create works of art that provoke the mind on environmental issues and climate change.

The eleven contemporary artists are Angeline Mhuka, Arlington Muzondo, Danisile Ncube, Dumisani Ndlovu, Fisani Nkomo, Kudzai Chikomo, Mavis Ndlovu, Mercy Moyo, Oubrey Bango, Owen Maseko and Zandile Vanessa Masuku and they have taken it upon themselves to raise public awareness on the threat of electronic plastics and metal waste to the environment.

Environmental hazards harm animals, humans, and vegetation while contributing to climate change.

“Today we have dump sites where all waste material is dumped. Imagine if we could invest in recycling these materials, we could make our world a better place. The material waste we dump in little dump sites contributes to the greater damage to our environment,” said one of the artists, Danisile Ncube.

Dumisani Ndlovu said, “The title of my piece is ‘Melting Point’, to show how the sun is now hotter than before because the ozone layer is tearing at an alarming rate. If only there were a way to properly discard waste, we could reduce the damage to our climate if we are not already late.”

The exhibition theme, ‘Black the New Green: Rethinking the Future’, supports the global cause for climate action.

“Based on our human actions we are not attentive to what the earth is saying to us. We have surveillance that tells us what’s happening, but we do not care. One is left wondering what’s next in our future with the way our environment is deteriorating, hence this piece is a depiction of how our world could be,” added Fisani Nkomo.

The artists recycled and reused materials picked from dump sites around the city of Bulawayo including Ngozi Mine.
