Story by Tamuka Charakupa
UPCOMING Sungura musician Onismo Zvandaziva has launched his second album in Kadoma, taking a message of hope and anti-drug awareness to the mining community.
The Kadoma-based artist, who is also a member of the ZANU PF National Youth League and serves as the Deputy Secretary for Arts and Culture, chose the mining area of Battlefields for the official launch of his latest project.
Onismo, who balances organisational responsibilities with his creative pursuits, said music remains his platform for telling the stories of ordinary Zimbabweans.
“The album Zviri Muhupenyu whi is my second album stays true to sungura’s traditional sound while reflecting real-life struggles, hopes, and community experiences. My music comes from what I see and what people around me share. The struggles of putting food on the table, the joy of family, the pain, the hope, it is all real life. I chose to launch the album in Battlefields because these communities are often overlooked when it comes to entertainment. I want people here to know their stories matter, and that music should come to their doorstep, not just big towns,” he said.
The decision to hold the launch in Battlefields was warmly welcomed by locals, who noted that the area rarely attracts prominent artists.
“We are happy he came here. It shows he remembers us, and his music speaks to our lives. We truly appreciate his talent,” said one resident.
Another added, “As young people, we look up to artists who stay connected to their roots. The messages in his songs are powerful, they encourage us to remain focused and work hard. We are grateful he chose our community first.”
Cde Onismo said he draws inspiration from celebrated sungura legend Alick Macheso and hopes his second album will serve as a vehicle to inspire, entertain, and unite people.
