FIVE-time world champions Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening FIFA World Cup Group C match at MetLife Stadium early Sunday morning.

The result marked a frustrating start to Brazil’s quest for a sixth World Cup title, as the Atlas Lions once again demonstrated why they have become one of the most formidable sides on the international stage.

Playing their first World Cup match since their quarter-final exit in 2022, Brazil found themselves under pressure for long periods and required a second-half response from Vinícius Júnior to salvage a point after Morocco had taken a surprise lead.

The draw leaves the Seleção with work to do in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive group, while Morocco will take confidence from a disciplined and spirited performance against one of the tournament favourites.

Elsewhere, Switzerland and Qatar shared the spoils in a 1-1 Group B draw at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The result leaves both teams level on points heading into the second round of group matches, with qualification prospects still firmly in their own hands.

Scotland made a winning start to their Group C campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Haiti.

Backed by a vocal travelling support, the Scots secured all three points to move to the top of the group standings ahead of Brazil and Morocco.

In Vancouver, Australia recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over Türkiye at BC Place, producing a composed performance to begin their World Cup campaign on a positive note.

The tournament continues this Sunday with another exciting programme of fixtures. Germany take on tournament debutants Curaçao in Houston, while the Netherlands face Japan in Arlington in two of the day’s headline matches.

With the group stages gathering momentum, teams will be eager to strengthen their positions as the race for a place in the knockout rounds intensifies.
