GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the family unit as a cornerstone of national development, highlighting its role in addressing social challenges and fostering community well-being.

The pledge was made during belated commemorations of the International Day of Families held in Wedza, Mashonaland East Province, on Friday. The event brought together community members, traditional leaders, religious figures and government officials under the theme, “Families, Inequalities and Child Well-being.”

Addressing the gathering, Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo described the family as the bedrock of society and a critical institution in the fight against social ills.

“Government recognises the family unit as a key pillar of society in fighting social ills such as drug and substance abuse, gender-based violence and child marriages. As our nation pursues Vision 2030, we must promote unity within families through the implementation of programmes that support good parenting and child protection,” he said.

Community members attending the commemorations stressed the importance of strong family structures in promoting social cohesion and safeguarding future generations.

“This day is important as it reflects the significance of unity among families and communities, especially against the backdrop of increasing drug and substance abuse,” said Wedza resident Ms Sheila Mugabe.

Religious leaders also highlighted their responsibility in nurturing family values and strengthening social harmony.

“As church leaders, we play a crucial role in promoting unity within families. We urge people to be wary of fake prophets who cause disunity and mistrust among family members,” said church leader Madzibaba Simba.

Young people were encouraged to play a positive role in shaping the country’s future by avoiding destructive behaviour.

“Young people are the leaders of tomorrow and should stay away from drug and substance abuse,” said youth representative Dondo Chigwedere.

The commemorations provided a platform for reflection on the central role families play in nurturing children, promoting social stability and supporting national development goals, particularly as Zimbabwe advances towards Vision 2030.
