IT was a fun-filled weekend as golf enthusiasts converged at Gweru Golf Club for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Commissioner General Goodwill Trust Fund golf tournament.
The golf tournament teed off this weekend, with golf fanatics battling it out for honours in a competition that attracted the young and the elderly.
“This golf tournament has provided the much-needed teamwork amongst officers and participants. I have also witnessed renewed energy amongst participants, which is critical in our line of duty,” Midlands Province Officer Commanding, Commissioner Somemore Gate said.
“I can see that teamwork is alive here in the Midlands province. Drugs have become our worst enemy in the country. We visited South African prisons and most of the crimes by Zimbabweans are a result of drug and substance abuse. The dealers are being arrested, but the sentencing is minimal. We need to revisit that area so that we have deterrent measures in dealing with drug and substance abuse cases,” ZPCS Commissioner General Dr Moses Chihobvu noted.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Owen Ncube commended the ZPCS for organising the sports tournament, which feeds into the National Development Strategy One.
“World over, sports, arts and culture have assumed cross-cutting dimensions in addressing socio-economic and political challenges in communities by promoting physical and mental health, inculcating values of discipline, teamwork, resilience, peace, unity patience and perseverance. Indeed, as we all now may be aware, sport has the power to transform lives as a form of employment and offers immense business opportunities, builds character, promotes social cohesion and fosters a sense of belonging,” he said.
The ZPCS Commissioner General Goodwill Trust Fund Golf Tournament is an annual event at which members of the ZPCS interact with the corporate world to mobilise funding for the vulnerable among its ranks.
