PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has underscored the importance of infrastructure development projects in propelling the country towards Vision 2030, anchored on transforming the livelihoods of the citizenry.
He was speaking at the commissioning of Phase Two of the Madokero Mall and Housing Complex in Tynwald, Harare this Friday.
After commissioning the Madokero Shopping Mall Phase One in 2022, the President was back to commission phase two of the project.
He expressed his appreciation for the work done as he shopped for a few items.
Barely two kilometres from the shopping mall is a new housing complex, the Madokero Creek, which has 148 detached and semi-detached units.
The project is owned by the Public Service Commission Pensions Fund.
After touring some of the housing units, President Mnangagwa said the project is in line with the country’s National Development Strategy.
“All these projects are significant milestones of the Second Republic’s journey and quest towards providing sustainable social protection for our citizens. In doing so, we are fortifying the pillars of our national development strategy through the construction and establishment of lasting assets. Since 2019, the Public Service Fund has been receiving and ring-fencing pension contributions from public officers.”
President Mnangagwa lauded the employment opportunities created by the project.
“It is commendable to note that over 2000 people were employed during the creek housing complex construction as well as Madokero Mall Phase Two. I have also noted that more than 60 companies were also engaged to supply various services during the construction. By fostering local industries and engaging local contractors, we are building a robust domestic supply chain and enhancing our industrial capacity. We are proud of the work by the local companies,” he said.
The President also used the platform to remind Zimbabweans that the future of the country is their responsibility.
“The future of our nation lies in our hands and not anyone else. The fact that this project was done by young boys and girls demonstrates the work ethic of our young people. The Public Service Pension Fund did not start yesterday, it has always been there but it started implementing huge projects under the Second Republic.”
Among those who witnessed the commissioning of the mall and housing projects is Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga.
Reducing the country’s housing backlog is key for the Second Republic and the goal is to build 220 000 new units by 2025.
