THE Zimbabwe Under-18 boys and girls basketball teams will be competing in the Afro Basket qualifiers in Zambia this Sunday.
The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe with support from the US Embassy Public Diplomacy Section is sponsoring a Sports Envoy programme which brings professional athletes and coaches from the United States to Zimbabwe.
“It’s been amazing being out here, my first time in Africa and being able to dive into the culture. Its been an amazing experience honestly and its been great to share in the game of basketball,” said Former NBA player, Billy Garrett Jnr.
The program consists of various outreach activities that involve the coaches and player clinics.
“We did start yesterday in Dzivarasekwa we had a very big turnout of at least 150 children between the ages of nine and thirteen. We also trained with DZ Hoops for Hope coache. We’ve got the Under-18’s both the boys and the girls which will be competing in the Afro basket qualifiers in Lusaka,” highlighted Basketball Union of Zimbabwe Secretary General, Charmaine Chamboko.
The Under-18s will be playing Afro Basket qualifiers against Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique in Zambia, with the tournament taking place in Johannesburg in August this year.
