ZIMBABWE’S tourism sector is targeting the construction of more than 10,000 new hotel rooms ahead of the 2029 Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), as the country ramps up preparations to host the continental event.
The expansion plan was a key focus of the two-day Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe Meet the Bankers Conference, where industry players explored funding options to increase accommodation capacity.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer, Dr George Manyaya, said the conference was aimed at mobilising financial support for the project.
“We are gathered here to look into the possibility of raising more funds from the banks. This is a key initiative which we hope shall further benefit the nation. It comes as Zimbabwe prepares to host this important event, and we stand ready to ensure it becomes a success,” he said.
Construction Industry Federation of Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer, Mr Martin Chingaira, said the construction sector was ready to support the expansion programme.
“The current trajectory presents opportunities for expansion as demand for infrastructure grows. This initiative requires close collaboration to facilitate growth in the sector,” he said.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring the country is ready to host the trade fair.
“As Government, we are honoured to host such an event. These engagements are assessing capital requirements and charting the way forward. All key stakeholders are here, and it is now important that the outcomes of these discussions are implemented for the benefit of the nation,” he said.
Zimbabwe secured the rights to host the 2029 Intra-African Trade Fair, with the expansion of hotel infrastructure expected to strengthen the country’s capacity to host major international events and support the continued growth of the tourism industry.
