THE Zimbabwe Military Police Corps has launched its 46th anniversary sports tournament in Masvingo, with organisers saying the event is aimed at strengthening discipline, teamwork and interaction among personnel.

More than nine teams from across the country are competing in the five-day tournament, which runs until Friday.

Participants will contest football, netball, volleyball, shooting, chess, pool and other indoor sporting disciplines.

Director Zimbabwe Military Police, Colonel Gondai Mwagura, said the annual tournament remains one of the corps’ flagship events.

“From this week up to 17 July, we are gathered here in Masvingo for our 46th anniversary celebrations through sport. We have teams from across the country competing in various disciplines. This is a very important event on our calendar, which is why we prioritise it,” he said.

Officially opening the tournament on behalf of Commander 4 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Oscar Tshuma, Colonel Austin Chavani said sport reinforces the core values required in military policing.

“Sport embodies the values of discipline, determination and resilience, which are the hallmark of the armed forces. It enhances both physical fitness and mental resilience, qualities that are essential for effective military policing,” he said.

The tournament is being held under the theme: “Zimbabwe Military Police Enhancing Contemporary Policing Through Sports to Ensure a Conducive Environment for Socio-Economic Development.”
