Zimbabwe makes significant strides in data protection

Story by Owen Mandovha, Business Reporter

A ground-breaking partnership between the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) and the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has catapulted Zimbabwe into a leading player in data protection and privacy standards on the continent.

POTRAZ director general, Dr Gift Machengete said the partnership places Zimbabwe ahead of many countries in data protection regulation in Africa.

“The area of data protection and privacy has become important over the years as the ICT industry continues to change. While the Artificial Intelligence space continues to expose organisational data to every threat available, we saw the need to collaborate with HIT to train data protection officers in the protection and data security. On the continent, only Ghana is ahead of us in this field.”

HIT Vice Chancellor, Engineer Quinton Kanhukamwe said the institution’s technological edge in modern ICT training makes them a natural choice to partner POTRAZ.

“There is indeed no doubt that the abundance of teaching skills we have here, especially in ICT has transformed the local ICT space and in particular, the course in data protection, which means that the economy and companies are protected from any direct threats of cyber fraud and other associated threats.”

During the last cabinet meeting of 2024, President Emmerson Mnangagwa underscored the need to entrench modern digital systems in government and public institutions to improve efficiency.
