Zimbabwe leads Africa in plant breeding innovations

ZIMBABWE is taking the lead in plant breeding, with several locally developed seed varieties now being cultivated across the African continent.

Speaking at the ongoing 4th African Plant Breeders Association (APBA) Conference in Victoria Falls, the association’s president, Professor Julia Sibiya, said Zimbabwe has made significant progress in formalising its seed sector compared to other African countries.

This comes as locally developed seed varieties continue to feed the continent, with several Zimbabwean companies expanding their footprint across the region.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister, Dr Anxious Masuka, challenged researchers to develop practical and innovative solutions aimed at ending hunger and malnutrition.

The conference, being held in southern Africa for the first time, has attracted nearly 400 delegates representing national systems, universities, the private sector, and policy institutions.
