Zim and Nicaragua strengthen ties in fight against sanctions

Story by Bruce Chahwanda, Political Editor

ZIMBABWE and Nicaragua have pledged to continue collaborating in the fight against illegal economic sanctions and neo-colonialism.

The need for continuous collaborations by like-minded nations topped the agenda at a symposium hosted by Nicaragua and the Chitepo School of Ideology in Harare on the history of Nicaragua, the legacy of revolutionary Augusto Sandino and the Sandinista Revolution.

Addressing stakeholders at the symposium, ZANU PF Secretary for External Affairs, Cde Simbarashe Mumbengegwi said global solidarity remains key in forging strong forces.

“We are excited to be part of these engagements, relations have grown from strength to strength. Chitepo School of Ideology has emerged as a think tank not only for ZANU PF but beyond borders as global solidarity remains key.”

Nicaragua Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellence Nadeska Cuthbert said Zimbabwe and Nicaragua continue to face challenges, hence the importance of resilience.

“We gained independence from Spain in 1 821, but true sovereignty has remained elusive. Zimbabwe continues to face sanctions which require resilience by the two countries and young people must take this forward as countries have exchanged arms for education to advance the revolution,” she said.

Reflecting on the legacy of Nicaragua’s revolutionary, Augusto Sandino, ZANU PF National Political Commissar, Cde Munyaradzi Machacha said Zimbabweans must always be inspired to fight neo-colonialism.

“Zimbabwe and Nicaragua will rise to the task with the support of like-minded nations to fight neo-imperialists. This symposium provides hope and unity among revolutionary parties.”

The Nicaraguan revolutionary Augusto Sandino was the founder of the militant group EDSN and leader of a rebellion between 1927 and 1933 against the United States occupation of his country.
