PLUMTREE -THE national campaign against drug and substance abuse was launched in Plumtree this Monday, with a 543-kilometre walkathon aimed at raising funds for the construction of rehabilitation centres across Zimbabwe.
Organised by Heal Us Zimbabwe, the initiative titled “Together We Walk, Together We Heal,” moves beyond awareness and now focuses on resource mobilisation for long-term recovery infrastructure.
Among those taking part is 22-year-old Terrence Shenje, a former Churchill High School student whose promising football career was derailed by drug addiction.
“I started taking drugs when I was 17 while still at Churchill. Coming from the ghetto, I succumbed to peer pressure. Now, most of the guys I played with are doing well. I believe my story can serve as a warning to others about the dire consequences of drug abuse,” he said.
Four, drug survivors will walk from Plumtree to Harare, a symbolic 543 kilometres, highlighting the journey from addiction to recovery.
Mr Columbus Mushore, Founder and Chairperson of Heal Us Zimbabwe, explained the transition from awareness to action.
“The 2025 anti-drug campaign walkathon is different from the first phase. This time, the focus is on raising resources for building rehabilitation centres. Awareness was the first step now we act,” he said.
Officiating at the farewell ceremony to launch the walk, Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, called on communities and the private sector to support the cause.
“I exhort the corporate world to partner with the government in fighting this menace. Let us support the Walkathon team in every way possible as they seek funding for rehabilitation centres. As the President always says Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo it is our collective responsibility to build this nation,” he said.
The campaign is part of a broader national effort by the Second Republic to confront the growing threat of drug and substance abuse, particularly among the youth.
