VP Mohadi applauds progress on independence celebrations venue

Story by Tafara Chikumira

VICE President Cde Kembo Mohadi has expressed satisfaction with the progress of civil works at Mutora Business Centre in Gokwe North, the venue for Zimbabwe’s 45th Independence Day celebrations.

Leading an inter-ministerial delegation on Friday, Vice President Mohadi assessed infrastructure developments, roadworks, and funding allocations, commending the team for their efforts.

“I have seen a lot of progress and am sure by the time we hold the celebrations all will be in place. We need to keep the momentum because where there are no roads, there is no development.

“We need to maintain our roads. Development is not about cities. Instead, it is about rural areas where we get our votes. To the team on the ground, I want to say well done. We are learning new things every day. I have the feeling that this is going to be more polished. With experience, we are witnessing some progress which is very much positive indeed,” Vice President Mohadi said.

The necessary funds have already been disbursed for the implementation of various civil works.

“Preparations have gathered momentum. The release of over US$14 million has propelled development. Turf at the ground is now at 95 %, changing rooms at 65 % and terraces at ground level. Local schools are also receiving attention,” Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Finance, Administration and Human Resources, Mr Zvinechimwe Churu said.

“We are now at 70 % of the project. We have started disbursement of the necessary funds to contractors. We have introduced a 24 hour schedule for contractors so we should be done by the time of the celebrations,” Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devotion, Honourable Owen Ncube said.

“I am very happy that much of the materials are now on site. I am told that by April 10 all the major works will be done. As you can see, those changing rooms are now ready for roofing. We are very impressed by the enthusiasm being shown by teams on the ground. The major roads and feeder roads are also getting the necessary attention which is commendable,” Minister of Local government and Public Works, Honourable Daniel Garwe said.

A communication strategy is also been implemented to ensure that the Independence celebrations are well attended.

“We have come up with a sound communication strategy to publicise the event. We have lined up some radio and television programmes to inform the people about the event. This is a critical event on our national calendar. We need to do justice so that people can come and enjoy their independence from colonial rule,” Minister of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere said.

This year’s independence celebrations are being held under the theme: ‘Zim @45 Devolve and develop together towards vision 2030.’

The main celebrations to be held on April 18 will be preceded by the children’s party to be held at Nyamuroro Primary school on the 17 of next month at Mutora Business Centre.
