Vice President Chiwenga in Rome for Pope Leo XIV‘s inauguration

Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has arrived in Rome, Italy, to represent President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV scheduled for this Sunday.

He is accompanied by his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira.

The ceremony will take place in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City, where an estimated 250 000 people are expected to gather.

The event marks the official beginning of Pope Leo XIV‘s papacy, during which he will receive the pallium and the fisherman’s ring, symbols of his authority as the head of the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV‘s, born in Chicago and holding dual U.S and Peruvian citizenship, is the first pope from the United States and also considered the first from Peru due to his missionary work there.

The 69-year-old was elected on May 8 after a brief conclave.

His election follows the death of Pope Francis on April 21, who led the Church for 12 years.

Dozens of world leaders are expected to attend the historic occasion.
