A US$20 000 fund has been set aside for a sporting tournament targeting youths in Makoni West Constituency as part of efforts to eradicate drug and substance abuse.
The initiative was announced this Saturday by Makoni West legislator who is also the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, during a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) sports tournament in Rusape.
Dr Muswere emphasised the importance of an integrated approach in tackling the drug and substance abuse menace, noting that sport is an effective tool in keeping young people engaged.
“The government is doing a lot to fight against drug abuse, and now the focus should be on identifying and dealing with the supply chain. It is critical for all community groups, such as religious groups and traditional leadership, to get involved and identify the drug lords and bring them to book. Platforms like sporting activities give youths a fighting chance to stay away from risky behaviours,” Dr Muswere said.
Participants in the tournament acknowledged the importance of sport in fighting the scourge.
“Being kept busy is important because one will not have time for silly things. Apart from that, it will keep our bodies fit,” one participant said.
“These events are not just for fun but for a good purpose. It’s important for us to take these things seriously as we join the important fight against drugs,” added another.
In addition to the fund, Dr Muswere handed over sporting kits to 19 wards in Makoni West Constituency.
The government has made significant strides in the fight against drug and substance abuse, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa having launched a resource mobilisation initiative to capacitate the fight.
A national taskforce has also been established to craft strategies aimed at curbing the social ill.
