TSHOLOTSHO – THE annual Zhwane Football Tournament, held over the Africa Day weekend in Tsholotsho, has once again demonstrated the powerful role of sport in addressing social challenges, with this year’s edition focusing on combating drug and substance abuse among youths.

The tournament, which features the top four teams from the Tsholotsho Junior League, is more than just a football event it is a grassroots initiative aimed at creating purpose, promoting discipline, and offering alternatives to young people in a region grappling with rising levels of drug and substance abuse.

Local youths who participated in the tournament shared how the sport has transformed their lives.

“I love football with all my heart. It helps me relax and focus, keeping me away from drugs and theft,” a player said.

“In Tsholotsho, many boys resort to drinking because they have nothing productive to do. Football gives us something to look forward to,” a boy said.

“Playing football has helped me avoid bad habits and substance abuse,” a footballer said.

“It keeps me away from drinking and smoking,” a player said.

The tournament enjoys strong backing from the local business community, which has pledged continued support to the cause through sponsorships aimed at sustaining the Zhwane Mini League throughout the year.

“As both a businessman and a parent, it is painful to see children struggle with drug abuse simply because they have nothing to do. That’s what inspired me to create this league and sponsor tournaments like this,” founder of the league, Bhekimpilo Ncube said.

“This is a community-driven league. We came together after seeing how idle time was driving our boys into drugs. Now they train almost every day, and that routine is making a difference,” Chairperson of the Zhwane Mini League, Ngqabutho Sibanda said.

The 2025 edition of the tournament concluded with Stubborn Buffaloes emerging as champions, capping off a weekend of talent, unity, and shared purpose.

With youth engagement and rehabilitation at the heart of its mission, the Zhwane Football Tournament is fast becoming a model of how community-led initiatives can serve as a defence against social decay and play a role in nation building.
