THE Government has pledged to strengthen collaboration with traditional leaders to accelerate the implementation of development programmes aimed at improving livelihoods across communities.

The commitment was reaffirmed during the installation of Mr Silas Chikwanda of the Moyo weVaDuma totem as Chief Chikwanda at a ceremony held at Chikwanda Primary School over the weekend.

Villagers who attended the colourful event said they were optimistic that the new chief’s appointment would enhance unity and deepen cooperation between community leadership and Government structures.

“We are happy to receive our new chief. We know he will unite us and work with the Government so that development projects, especially in agriculture, water schemes and other areas, continue being implemented in our area. Traditional leaders understand our challenges on the ground, and they are our torchbearers when it comes to community cohesion. We believe Chief Chikwanda will help bring progress to our community,” said one villager.

The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Daniel Garwe, who was accompanied by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Garwe underscored the strategic role played by traditional leaders in governance and development.

“Traditional leaders are an important arm of governance. Government will continue to support them as they mobilise communities to participate in development programmes that improve livelihoods,” he said.

Minister Chadzamira echoed the sentiments, urging chiefs to promote unity and inclusive development.

“We expect traditional leaders to champion unity and development so that no community is left behind as we pursue national development goals,” he said.

Traditional leaders serve as a critical link between Government and citizens, mobilising communities around development initiatives while safeguarding social cohesion and cultural values.
