Tourism operators scale up facilities amid growing demand in Binga

TOURISM operators in Binga District, Matabeleland North Province, are expanding accommodation facilities and diversifying leisure offerings in response to a steady increase in tourist arrivals, signalling renewed growth in the area’s tourism sector.

The growth is being fuelled by rising demand during peak holiday periods, cultural festivals and nature-based tourism experiences, prompting several operators to upgrade infrastructure and increase capacity.

Lodges across the riverside district are expanding bed space, improving amenities and constructing conference facilities to cater for growing visitor numbers, particularly during festive seasons and major cultural events.

BaTonga Villa Director, Mr Zilongezyo Mzamba, said the ongoing developments reflect growing confidence among investors in Binga’s tourism potential.

“We have seen a number of players in Binga expanding their operations. Some lodges that previously operated with five or eight beds have expanded to 15, while others are constructing conference halls to accommodate more people.”

He noted that Binga had traditionally attracted limited visitor numbers outside holidays and festivals, but demand has been increasing steadily, prompting operators to prepare in advance.

Binga used to receive only a few visitors during holidays and festivals, but demand has been growing. These developments show anticipation of increased tourism, and operators are preparing to avoid inconveniencing clients,” Mr Mzamba said.

The Binga Tourism Association Chairperson, Mrs Teresa Leach, confirmed that tourism operators are responding positively to the growing demand, although expansion is being implemented gradually.

“We are working towards expansion, though slowly. For example, at Lakeview, we previously had nine rooms, and now we have 13, with four semi-finished rooms that will bring the total to 17. Journey’s End has also expanded, while Twice Happy has added rooms by converting another property. It is working,” said Mrs Leach.

In addition to accommodation upgrades, operators are broadening the range of experiences available to visitors. New adventure activities, including quad biking, cultural tours and enhanced lake-based activities, are being introduced to attract a wider market and encourage longer stays.

Binga continues to draw visitors with its unique natural attractions, such as its white sand beach, fishing opportunities on the Zambezi River and the popular Chimbwatata Hot Springs, which remain key highlights for both domestic and international tourists.
