PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasised that the prosperity of the African continent lies in the hands of its young people.

He made this statement during the National Youth Day celebrations, which attracted thousands of young people from across the country in Bulawayo this Friday.

Delegates from other countries also attended the event, and President Mnangagwa noted that their presence is a testament to the unity and solidarity that characterise the SADC region and the entire African continent.

Using this platform, President Mnangagwa reminded the young people that the well-being and success of Africa depend on their efforts and actions.

“The prosperity and future of our region and Africa is in your hands. We, the older generation, played our part in bringing about independence, freedom, and peace. The ball is now on your court. You must deliver. In unity, the youth of Africa can do more for the realisation of the Africa we want.”

The President also said the zeal exhibited by Zimbabwean youths to work, must be harnessed for the good of the country.

“This National Youth Day is set aside and dedicated to recognising the potential in you  the young people of our country.” He said.

“Us your leaders, believe in your potential, and will continue to ensure that your zeal and energy are harnessed so that you accomplish your dreams and aspirations and ultimately our national vision 2030.

“The huge turnout, peaceful, jovial, and electric atmosphere characterising this gathering is a reflection of our collective unity and defining national character as an independent and sovereign people.”

Unity remains a key ingredient for national development and the Head of State urged the youths to resist those who may want to divide them.

“I commend you for the consciousness you have of our rich history as well as the future we are marching towards. I urge you to continue working hard for our great motherland, Zimbabwe, with unflinching patriotism and loyalty.

“Resist and reject machinations of those who would want to divide you, and divide our nation. As we observe this special day, it is yet another opportunity to reflect on the critical role played by youths of yester-year in laying a solid and unshakable foundation for our beloved motherland Zimbabwe,” President Mnangagwa said.

National Youth Day is a holiday that was set aside to celebrate and reflect on the role of the country’s youths in national development.
