Strong tobacco deliveries boost farmer incomes, forex earnings

ZIMBABWE’S tobacco sector is off to a strong season, with deliveries rising by over 80 percent within the first 20 days of the auction season, signalling increased earnings for farmers and a boost in foreign currency inflows.

According to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board, more than 65 million kilogrammes of tobacco have been sold so far, up from 36 million kilogrammes recorded during the same period last year, reflecting an 81 percent increase.

The surge in volumes has translated into higher earnings, with the golden leaf generating over US$185 million, compared to US$125 million during the corresponding period last year, a 47 percent rise.

The strong performance underscores continued growth in Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry, with analysts noting that increased deliveries are set to improve farmer incomes while strengthening the country’s foreign currency reserves.

With the positive momentum, Zimbabwe is now firmly on track to meet its ambitious target of 400 million kilogrammes this season.

The upward trend builds on last year’s milestone, when farmers delivered over 350 million kilogrammes for the first time, highlighting sustained expansion and resilience within the sector.
