THE SADC Military Health Working Group have been impressed by GeoPomona Waste to Energy Project, which they visited following the conclusion of their Annual General Meeting in Harare this Wednesday.

The Military Health Working Group’s interest in the project was to establish the uniqueness of the waste management initiative, which continues to attract admirers locally and internationally.

Their expectations were equally met and fit ideally into the working group’s one health concept as described by Lieutenant General Ntshaveni Maphaha of the South African Defence Forces and Brigadier General Jackson Kasela of the Zambian Defence Forces.

“When I was coming here, I thought that this is a dumpsite, but the project has impressed me to a larger extent and will form part of our recommendations,” Brigadier General Kasela said.

“Our mandate as the working group is to safeguard the population we work with. We visited this site so that we learn how we can make recommendations to our commanders,” Lieutenant General Ntshaveni Maphaha added.

Chairperson of the Working Group, Brigadier General Gerald Mutetse spoke in detail on how the initiative will feature in their recommendations.

“This tour is part of our AGM and falls within our mandate to ensure that the army operates in environments that are healthy and friendly. The GeoPomona made an impression on this working group in terms of its innovative nature and modern waste management practices.”

The GeoPomona Waste Management Company is on course for further collaborations with SADC countries, which have shown interest in replicating the initiative in their countries.
