DIPLOMATIC interactions between Zimbabwe and Belarus have recorded increased cooperation following the signing of agreements during the closing session of the Mid Term Review (MTR) of the Zimbabwe- Belarus Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC) in Harare this Wednesday.
The signing of an agreement on cooperation between AVM Africa of Zimbabwe and Aftrade of Belarus for the setting up of a bus assembly plant in Zimbabwe, was the major highlight of the session.
“The signing of additional agreements is testament to further consolidating the current trend with the key thrust being on the need to cement cordial relations. Going forward, we are committed to signing more agreements to bolster trade and investment,” Belarus’ Deputy Prime Minister, Honourable Victor Karankevich said.
Zimbabwe and Belarus also committed to the implementation of this and many other agreements, some of which were signed during previous sessions of the JPCC.
“Belarus is a long-term strategic partner for Zimbabwe and our aim is to enhance cooperation riding on the current gains. As such, there is need to continue revisiting the current agreements and focus on implementation as the hallmark for success,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and Head of Zimbabwe’s Ministerial Delegation Professor Amon Murwira noted.
Key takeaways from the communique issued at the conclusion of the session include strengthened cooperation in agriculture, progress in bilateral relations across multiple sectors, and Zimbabwe’s heartfelt appreciation for Belarus’ humanitarian support during the El Nino-induced drought last year.
The review also underscored the importance of fully implementing existing agreements and maintaining regular diplomatic engagement.
Notably, Belarus has agreed to host the next JPCC review session.
Both countries also highlighted the adverse effects of illegal sanctions on their economies and reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting a fair and inclusive global trading system.
