THE Mabaweni Community in Matabeleland South Province is the latest to receive seamless and affordable internet connectivity following the commissioning of a digital centre courtesy of government’s policy to connect the unconnected.
Internet connectivity is no longer a luxury, but a basic service, especially in today’s digital age of a global village where data has become a key enabler in driving economic activities and uniting communities.
The vision was demonstrated at Mabaweni Business Centre this Thursday, where a community information centre has been established, much to the delight of community members, particularly youths.
“We are on a drive to ensure that we connect the unconnected by providing resources that complement our regulatory role to even the playing field,” POTRAZ Deputy Director General, Mr Alfred Marisa said.
The Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera said accelerated internet connectivity will empower communities and create a digital economy.
“It is our mandate to ensure that there is seamless internet connectivity even in rural and remote areas, hence our roadmap to establish these community information centres in and around the country. At Mabaweni, we have established this digital centre that resonates with our quest to connect the unconnected.”
At the same event, Minister Mavetera donated laptops to Mabaweni, Mbalabala and Mlomoliwoto primary schools to harness ICT capacity for young learners in rural schools.
The Mabaweni Digital Centre is one of the 15 community information centres established in Matabeleland South Province, marking a significant achievement in providing internet connectivity to previously marginalised and remote areas.
