Road upgrade boosts access, mining and tourism in Hwange District

PUBLIC-Private partnerships (PPPs) are increasingly shaping infrastructure delivery in Zimbabwe, with Government and Kamativi Mining Company collaborating on the rehabilitation of the Cross Dete-Kamativi Road in Hwange District.

The 28-kilometre project is already improving access in Matabeleland North Province, with communities welcoming the works as a step towards safer and more reliable transport.

“What KMC is doing is good for this community. It will create a safe passage to Kamativi,” Chairperson of the Kamativi Residents Association Mr Timothy Mvula said.

“It came at the right time because the road was in a sorry state of affairs. In the event of an accident, it was difficult for rescuers to access the area. But now, the road is being patched up and repaired where it was damaged. It is now user-friendly and accessible for those travelling to and from Hwange, and even for long-distance travellers such as those going to Binga. The Cross Dete to Kamativi stretch is now user-friendly,” Kamativi Ward 11 Councillor Mr Josh Tshuma weighed in.

The rehabilitation is expected to enhance transport efficiency, support mining operations in Kamativi and Muchesu, and stimulate tourism in Binga.

KMC Chief Operating Officer Mr Dexi Liang said the works are being undertaken in partnership with the Road Maintenance Department to meet required standards.

“Recently, we partnered with the Road Maintenance Department to rehabilitate the road stretch from Cross Dete to Kamativi, which is about 28 kilometres. We are working together with the Ministry of Transport Roads Department to ensure that this work is done to the required quality standards,” he said.

The initiative underscores the expanding role of PPPs in delivering critical infrastructure and improving livelihoods.
