ROAD authorities are being called on to harmonise operations as Zimbabwe targets increased regional trade connectivity.
With the Matabeleland South linking Zimbabwe to SADC trading partners, there is a general consensus among stakeholders who gathered for a Provincial Development Committee Meeting in Gwanda this Friday that road authorities should cooperate to facilitate development.
The Bulawayo- Kezi Road rehabilitation works emerged as a key highlight of the meeting.
“We are working on a number of projects in the province, we are doing Bulawayo-Kezi which is 10km, the contractor is already on site, and they have started working on the road, so far they have done three kilometres, which is basically the foundation of the road. We are also doing Gwanda-Maphisa road, we have already handed over the project to the contractor,” Provincial Roads Engineer, Mangisi Nkomo said.
The provincial leadership is convinced that the projects should be completed on time to ensure that Zimbabwe attains an upper-middle-income society by 2030.
“Our people want us to deliver, the three road authorities should ensure that they work together, our people do not know that this road belongs to RIDA or Council, they want passable roads, we should join hands, those with machinery, those with fuel we should come together and deliver quality roads to our people,” Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe said.
The Ministry of Roads and Infrastructure Development is also working on rehabilitating the Plumtree- Maitengwe and Beitbridge- Bulawayo Highway.
