Race for PSL title turns into two-horse race

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Reporter

The battle for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title is slowly becoming a two-horse race, with Simba Bhora wrestling with FC Platinum for the coveted crown.

The 2024 PSL title race can be likened to a boxing match with two fighters evenly matched in trading blows.

It has become a two-horse race between Simba Bhora and FC Platinum with the top sides separated by just two points.

FC Platinum went into Match Day 24 the log leaders, but Simba Bhora emerged from the action at the apex of the log.

Shamva-based Simba Bhora were first onto the pitch and overcame Bulawayo Chiefs one-nil on Saturday, opening a two-point lead at the top.

With a chance to reclaim top spot, FC Platinum fluffed their lines after they were shocked by Bikita Minerals one-nil at Sakubva Stadium on Sunday.

The two sides might be separated by two points, but there isn’t much difference between them after conceding 18 goals apiece, while FC Platinum seem to be slightly shaper upfront having scored 33 goals compared to Simba’s 30.

Highlanders are still within touching distance, trailing the log leaders by nine points with 10 games to go, while fourth-placed Ngezi Platinum have the same number of points having played a game less.

Fifth-placed Manica Diamonds are on a free fall and struggling to score goals amid high expectations after second-place finish last season.

At the other end of the table, any team can still be relegated, but those in immediate danger are Arenel, Chegutu Pirates, Hwange and TelOne.

Arenel anchor the log standings with 18 points, Chegutu with 19 and Hwange on 20 are just above them, while TelOne who have 24 points conclude the drop zone.

Bulawayo Chiefs, Bikita Minerals, Green Fuel and Yadah are however still in still in the relegation matrix.
