GOVERNMENT has commended private sector contributions to national development following the donation of three buses by businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo to Highlanders Football Club, John Landa Nkomo High School, and Dudley Hall Primary School.
The gesture carries personal significance for Chivayo, who attended Dudley Hall Primary, grew up under the mentorship of the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, and is a long-time supporter of Highlanders FC.
Acting President Colonel (Retired) Kembo Mohadi described the donation as a prime example of how partnerships between government and the private sector can support national priorities.
“These buses represent more than mobility. They symbolise access, opportunity and progress. For Highlanders Football Club, improved mobility will enhance player development, competitive readiness and community engagement. For John Landa Nkomo High School and Dudley Hall Primary School, the buses will support learners’ participation in educational and extracurricular activities, ensuring no child is left behind due to logistical challenges,” he said.
“This act of giving is a reminder that development is a shared responsibility. Philanthropy is not about image, but about investing in people, values and the future of our nation. On behalf of Government, we commend Mr Chivhayo for his continued support of sport and education. His contribution aligns with national development priorities and demonstrates how public-private partnerships can drive meaningful change.”
Businessman and philanthropist, Wicknell Chivayo commended government for creating a conducive environment for local businesses to thrive.
“Achievements in education and sport would not be possible without Government’s support and visionary policies that have created a conducive environment for the private sector. As young businesspeople, we are called upon to play our part in national development, and today’s ceremony reflects the strength of public-private partnerships. On behalf of the business community, I express our sincere gratitude to the government for creating an enabling environment that allows us to conduct business responsibly and give back to our communities through meaningful corporate social responsibility initiatives.”
The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Honourable Torerai Moyo welcomed the donation, saying it will significantly improve access to learning while easing operational challenges faced by schools.
“Today, we celebrate a collective vision that emphasises the importance of supporting our learners and empowering them to thrive in their educational journeys. With these vehicles, learners will now have access to reliable transportation to and from school, ensuring consistent attendance, a critical factor for academic success. The two buses will also enable students to participate in educational trips, sporting events and cultural activities without the uncertainty often associated with hired transport. In addition, this will significantly reduce the financial burden on schools, freeing up resources for other essential needs.”
Highlanders Football Club also welcomed the gesture, saying the bus will improve operations and player welfare.
“This contribution will directly enhance our operational efficiency and, most importantly, improve the welfare and morale of our players and staff. We assure you that the Board receives this donation with a clear sense of responsibility. The asset will be managed prudently, maintained diligently and used strictly in the service of the club’s objectives and the broader football community,” Highlanders Board Chairperson, Luke Mkandla said.
The donation adds to a growing list of philanthropic initiatives by Chivayo, whose support for national development spans sport, education and the creative sector.
Beginning with Highlanders, where he has committed financial support running into more than US$1 million, Chivayo has also extended assistance to Zimbabweans from all walks of life, including musicians, artists, sports personalities and ordinary citizens, reinforcing the role of private sector involvement in uplifting communities across the country.
