President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the 38th Ordinary Eession of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
President Mnangagwa was received at the Bole International Airport by Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Ethiopia, Sophia Nyamudeza and officials from the host country’s government.
The President is expected to have a number of engagements during the summit which ends on Sunday.
This year’s summit is being held under the theme, ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations’, which will be launched by the heads of state this weekend.
The theme seeks to address past wrongs that stem from colonialism, trans-Atlantic enslavement, apartheid or systemic discrimination.
As explained by the African Union secretariat, the aim is to bring together the African citizenry and the African diaspora to build a common and united front for the cause of justice and payment of reparations to Africans for historical crimes and mass atrocities committed against Africans and people of African descent, including colonisation, apartheid and genocide.
As the leaders meet expectations are that they will also discuss the continent’s socio-economic development as well as peace and security in the region.
